Hot Stamping

Jun 16,2026

Hot stamping, also known as hot foil stamping, is a specialized printing and post-press finishing process that does not use ink. Instead, it transfers metallic or pigmented foil onto a substrate through the application of heat and pressure. This technique imparts a strong metallic texture and a luxurious visual effect to packaging and printed materials, serving as a vital method for elevating product quality and perceived value.

Below is a comprehensive breakdown of the hot stamping process:

1. Core Working Principle

The hot stamping process can be simply summarized in three steps: "heat, pressure, and transfer." Under specific temperature and pressure, a custom-made metal stamping die (typically made of copper or zinc) presses the electrochemical aluminum foil (or foil of other colors) onto the surface of the substrate (such as paper, plastic, leather, etc.). At this point, the hot-melt adhesive layer on the foil melts due to the heat, allowing the metallic layer to bond firmly with the substrate. Meanwhile, the base film layer is peeled away, leaving behind smooth, glossy graphics and text with a striking metallic sheen.

2. Main Types of Hot Stamping

With technological advancements, hot stamping has evolved from a traditional, singular form into various techniques:

  • Standard Hot Stamping: The most basic process, where metallic foil is stamped flat onto paper or packaging surfaces, presenting a silver, gold, or colored metallic luster.
  • Embossed Hot Stamping (Foil Stamping & Embossing): This combines hot stamping with embossing. It uses upper and lower relief dies to create a three-dimensional embossed effect while stamping. The result not only features a metallic sheen but also offers a strong tactile, 3D texture.
  • Cold Foil Stamping: This process requires no heat; instead, it uses UV adhesive to bond the foil to the substrate. Characterized by high speed and low plate-making costs, it is highly suitable for high-volume, high-speed label and flexible packaging printing.
  • Holographic Hot Stamping: This utilizes stamping foil featuring laser holographic patterns. Once stamped, the surface displays a color-shifting optical anti-counterfeiting effect, commonly used in premium tobacco and alcohol packaging, as well as valuable securities.
  • Stamping with Other Materials: Beyond metallic foils, the process can also apply colored pigment foils in black, red, blue, and other hues, as well as laser films and wood-grain films.
