Full Introduction to Digital Printing
I. What Is Digital Printing
II. Core Working Principles
- Designers export digital files in PDF, image and other formats.
- The equipment reads electronic documents and transfers images via two mainstream imaging technologies:
- Toner Electrostatic Imaging (Laser Digital Printers, the most widely used)
- Charged drums attract toner particles, which are fused and fixed onto materials through heat, working similar to large-format laser printers.
- Inkjet Imaging (for wide-format artwork, soft furnishings and packaging proofing)
- Printheads spray ink directly onto material surfaces without high-temperature processing.
III. Two Main Types of Digital Printing
1. Toner-Based Digital Printing (Production-Grade Digital Presses, Mainstream for Graphic & Packaging Printing)
Advantages
- Stable color performance and fine dot patterns, delivering textures close to offset printing
- Compatible with thick paper and specialty stock; supports inline post-processing such as foil stamping and lamination
- Ideal for brochures, posters, gift box inserts, labels and user manuals
Disadvantages
2. Inkjet Digital Printing (Wide-Format, Packaging & Soft Furnishings)
Advantages of UV Inkjet
IV. Core Advantages of Digital Printing (vs. Conventional Offset Printing)
No plate making required, ultra-low minimum order cost
Conventional offset printing is cost-effective only for runs of hundreds or thousands of copies. Digital printing accepts orders starting from a single piece, perfect for proofing and small-batch customization.
Variable Data Printing (Exclusive Core Function)
Unique customizable content on every sheet: membership card serial numbers, personalized invitation names, QR codes on tickets, custom gift box cards. Conventional printing cannot achieve this affordably.
Fast Turnaround
Files go straight to printing upon confirmation, skipping hours-long plate making and machine setup. Same-day delivery is widely available.
Reduced Inventory Pressure
Print-on-demand production eliminates bulk stockpiling, suitable for cultural creative goods and small e-commerce orders.
Streamlined Workflow
Greatly simplified process: Design → Proofreading → Printing.
V. Drawbacks & Limitations
Higher unit cost for large-volume orders
For runs of several thousand or tens of thousands of copies, conventional offset printing has a lower per-unit cost. Digital printing suits short-run jobs better.
Lack of rich texture for large solid color areas
Heavy full dark backgrounds tend to accumulate and smudge toner; offset printing delivers thicker, fuller ink layers.
Limited maximum print size
Standard digital presses mostly support A3/A3+ maximum formats. Wide-format inkjet is the only choice for oversized posters and large display boards.
Poor compatibility with certain special processes
Less satisfactory effects for large-area spot colors, pearlescent finishes and heavy ink layers compared to screen printing and flexography.
VI. Common Application Scenarios
- Commercial Graphic Printing: Flyers, brochures, desk calendars, business cards, tender documents, conference materials
- Packaging Industry: Gift box inner cards, product manuals, small-batch color boxes, packaging proofs, self-adhesive labels
- Custom Cultural & Creative Products: Personalized greeting cards, invitations, photo albums, custom postcards
- Advertising Materials: Small-format posters, display stand graphics, stickers
- Labels & Vouchers: Variable QR code labels, event tickets, discount coupons, membership serial number cards
